Aprilia Shiver

Aprilia Shiver
World’s first motorcycle to feature ride-by-wire technology arrives in U.S. with a limited-time high-tech bonus for enthusiasts

American sport bike enthusiasts who refuse to sacrifice rideability and comfort for spirited performance and aggressive good looks have a tempting new solution – Aprilia’s first-ever middleweight sport bike, the SL 750 Shiver.

On sale in the U.S. market in early 2008, the Shiver V-Twin is the first all-new, middle-weight V-Twin to debut from the company’s Noale, Italy factory.

The 2008 Aprilia Shiver combines Aprilia’s race-proven technology and functional design philosophy with sophisticated components and materials never before available on a 750cc motorcycle, such as the first-ever application of ride-by-wire throttle control technology and the category’s first application of radial caliper race brakes.

These rare standard features signal the Shiver’s serious appreciation of an enthusiast’s performance demands, while the motorcycle’s ultra-light weight, comfortable upright riding position and refined suspension all create a motorcycle equally at home on city streets, highways or serpentines.

The 2008 Aprilia SL750 Shiver has a manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) of $8,999.00 USD. Color choices for U.S. riders include Fever Silver and Code Orange.

Yamaha FZ8

Yamaha FZ8 All-new 779cc engine combines new top end components, including ceramic-composite-coated cylinders and forged aluminum pistons, with a carefully optimized crankshaft to deliver the perfect power curve and torquey performance character for this category. The FZ8 fills the gap for sport riders who feel a 600cc is too small and a 1000cc is too big. New 779cc liquid-cooled, 4-stroke, inline 4-cylinder, 4-valve engine delivers smooth power delivery and gobs of torque in the low to mid rpm range. But this engine also lets loose with eye-opening horsepower when the revs climb toward redline. Cast aluminum frame uses the engine as a stressed member and allows for optimal rigidity balance, light weight, and superb handling. Six engine-mounting points help provide superb longitudinal rigidity. Mass-forward” naked bike styling is accentuated by the headlight design. FZ1-style instrument cluster features a great looking tachometer with a white face.

Honda's ST1100/ST1100 ALTII Propaganda

* Linked Braking System (LBS) combines with Antilock Brake System (ABS) for a wide range of braking control. Traction Control System (TCS) is also featured.

* LBS uses a second master cylinder and a proportion control valve to couple the calipers of the duel front and single rear disc brakes. Using either the handlebar lever or the foot pedal activates all three calipers, but the rider controls brake force distribution between the front and rear wheels depending on which control is used. As the rider increases braking force and weight transfers forward, the proportion control valve progressively shifts the balance of braking force in three steps toward the front wheel.
LBS-ABS
* Delay valve minimizes fork dive when minor speed corrections are made using only the rear brake, offering enhanced control and ease of operation on irregular or low-friction road surfaces.

* ABS features an electric-motor-driven modulator which gives quick, precise braking-pressure adjustments, and smooth ABS operation. The system incorporates an integrated ECU controller, self-diagnostics with an interactive ECU test function, and automatic protection against system failure.

* Computer-engineered aerodynamic front fender with integrated fork guards gives good protection with enhanced air flow.

* Large, 43mm front fork (ALT only; 41mm standard model) features cartridge-type configuration and Torque Reactive Anti-dive Control (TRAC).

* Z-rated radial tires offer enhanced performance to match machine's touring capability and braking performance (ALT model only).

Engine:

* Liquid-cooled 1084cc longitudinally mounted V-4 engine produces excellent horsepower and torque over a wide rpm range.

* Shim-under-bucket valve actuation ensures high-rpm reliability while being more compact and lighter than a conventional rocker-arm system, and offers 16,000 mile valve adjustment intervals.

* Belt-driven camshaft for smooth, quite, reliable operation. Four-valve-per-cylinder technology provides excellent combustion efficiency and high power.

* Four 34.5mm constant velocity (CV) carburetors provide crisp throttle response at all rpm.

* Cassette-type, five-speed transmission. Quiet and reliable shaft drive system. Clutch, main shaft and drive shaft dampers for reduced noise, vibration and driveline lash.

* Aluminum radiator keeps temperatures in check for consistent performance and long engine life.

* High-output 40-amp air-cooled ACG allows installation of varied electrical accessories, and delivers substantial output even at low rpm.

* Digital ignition system.

Chassis/Suspension:

* Computer-designed steel frame is strong and positions the engine low for superb maneuverability and precise handling.

* Wind-tunnel-designed and tested fairing with Honda's Air Control WindscreenTM offers superb wind and weather protection, low noise and superior high-speed aerodynamics.

* 43mm cartridge fork (41mm standard model) offers a compliant, controlled ride.

* Torque Reactive Anti-dive Control (TRACTM) reduces fork compression during braking.

* Single-shock, swingarm-mounted rear suspension system offers spring pre-load and rebound damping adjustability.

* Wide, three-spoked cast aluminum wheels fitted with V-rated bias-belted tires (standard model) or Z-rated radial tires (ALT model).

* Duel-disc front brake and single-disc rear brake.

* Roomy cockpit and ergonomically designed duel-density seat offer true long-haul comfort (not sure about that seat).

Additional Features:

* Enormous 7.4-gallon fuel tank is located below the seat for a low center of gravity and offers phenomenal touring range.

* Detachable, lockable,color-matched 35-liter saddlebags are standard equipment and can each hold a full-face helmet.

Honda X-Wing Prototype

Honda X-Wing Prototype
During the 2000 bike show season, Honda began showing a prototype sport tourer called the X-Wing, which featured a 1,500 cc V6 engine, single-sided front and rear suspension and an automatic transmission. Speculation in the press that the X-Wing was the ST1100's replacement was partially confirmed when Honda introduced an all-new ST1300 Pan-European in Europe and Australia for the 2002 model year. For the U.S. market, the new bike would be imported in limited numbers (about 2,200 per year) starting in 2003 as the ST1300.

Honda ST1300

For those seeking long-distance comfort along with exemplary engine performance and superior handling, Honda presents the ST1300 Sport Touring motorcycles which earn high marks from riders all around the globe.

Although the ST1300 bikes don’t feature any changes or upgrades for 2009, earlier production models are almost as important as future ones as they provide the needed feedback for later revamps.

The Honda ST1300 is a fully-faired touring motorcycle which proves that the performance that comes with a sport bike and the luxury associated with a long-distance tourer aren’t mutually exclusive goals. In fact, they can coexist quite happily on one motorcycle, and the ST1300 ABS proves it. This is a great bike for those who want to ride many miles in comfort and security without sacrificing bad-boy power and performance.

A low-slung, liquid-cooled 1261cc V4 engine mounted directly to the frame powers the Honda ST1300, and it features excellent front Dual Hydraulic Disc brakes. It manages to be less top-heavy than the ST1100 (its predecessor) by virtue of a split fuel tank and a revised engine layout, which shift some of the bike’s 630lbs downward. Comfort and accommodation are important as well, which is why this bike features a comfortable standard riding posture and hard saddlebags.

Harley-Davidson introduced the Softail chassis in 1984

Harley-Davidson introduced the Softail chassis in 1984. The original Softails used the small FX telescopic forks, but the FLST Heritage Softail with large FL telescopic forks was introduced in 1986. The FLSTC Heritage Softail Classic, with large front forks and retro styling, was in production by 1988.

Other Softails with big forks followed, including the 1990 introduction of the FLSTF Fat Boy and the 1993-only FLSTN "Cow Glide". The base FLST Heritage Special was discontinued in 1991.[14] The FLSTN was continued after 1993 without the bovine motif as the Nostalgia model until 1997, when it was replaced by the FLSTSC Springer Classic.[14] The Springer Classic is also designated as an FL despite using Springer forks instead of the large FL telescopic forks.

In 2000, all Softails, including the FL models, were switched from the Evolution engine to the counterbalanced Twin Cam 88B engine specially developed for the rigid engine mounting in this frame.

The FLSTN designation returned in 2005 with the Softail Deluxe. The FLSTN Deluxe, which was introduced in 2005, also came with an option of carb or EFI models.[citation needed] The year 2005 was also the last in which a carb was offered on all HD models.

The Suzuki RV125 VanVan is an enigmatic motorcycle, that’s for sure. Farm hands, gamekeepers, race teams and surf dudes would be the ideal customers: it’s perfect for whizzing around country estates, race paddocks and beaches. Fashion-conscious, retro fans must love Suzuki RV125 VanVans. Teenagers, probably, don’t. Who knows? But it’s still pretty cute: better than a quad or a scooter, either way.

Engine

The tiny, air-cooled four stroke Suzuki RV125 VanVan pulls acceptably in lower gears but, overall, lacks any really useful power. There’s no top end and it struggles to reach, let alone break, the national speed limit. What power there is, however, is smoothly delivered and the Suzuki RV125 VanVan's engine itself is very reliable. The Suzuki RV125 VanVan cruises happily at, erm, 50mph.

Very low and very comfy, the Suzuki RV125 VanVan’s a stable, smooth ride with good, if very basic, suspension and brakes. It’s light and easy to ride with a tiny turning circle, aided by wide bars. The gearbox, alas, is crunchy and agricultural while the chassis has a habit of rattling when you’re on the move, which is somewhat disconcerting. The Suzuki RV125 VanVan is not very at home on the open road.

The naked version of the GS500

The naked version of the GS500 was released into the US in 1989 under the model name GS500E. It was equipped with an air-cooled 487 cc parallel twin engine derived from the earlier GS450. The bike is widely used for commuting purposes due to its good horsepower, decent torque, light weight, highly reliable engine as well as its excellent fuel economy. They are also a popular choice for beginner riders because of their low price and cost of ownership. The GS500 is able to be restricted (or is under the maximum power to weight ratio) for use in countries where restrictive motorcycle licenses are issued (such as the UK Class 'A' motorcycle license) which added to its worldwide popularity. In 2002, Suzuki stopped producing the GS500E for the US market and didn't release a GS500 for 2003. In 2007, Suzuki dropped the GS500E from its U.K. range though still continues to be sold in many other countries.

Suzuki GSF 650 SA , a motorbike that I have

This page is dedicated to the Suzuki GSF 650 SA , a motorbike that I have owned for the last 2 years or so (2008 model).

The reason I decided to write about this motorbike, is because I believe it's a nice machine  and worth knowing about.

I will try to provide as much information as I have gathered on the Bandit, including articles from magazines, (some of them written in Greek). Also my opinion after riding this classic looking bike.

Someone who wants to do trips, solo or two-up and wants to be able to carry a decent amount of luggage. The Bandit can easily and safely be loaded with soft or hard panniers. The furthest I've ridden on a single day trip is 350km or 200 miles two-up or 660km (400 miles) solo.

Someone who likes the smoothness of a 4 cylinder engine with enough amount of torque that can also be revved up to 12000rpm when they feel like it. Ok this is nowhere near as fast as a Gixxer, but it pulls linearly from 50 to 200km/h in sixth gear. It will run on 6th from 30kph (~20mph).

Someone who isn't too worried about the extra weight. Ok the Bandit is a 240kg beast. It's the heaviest bike in its category. If this is your first proper bike, chances are you will drop it on its side at some point. The weight is not a problem while moving. It's while maneuvering the bike around U turns that it feels cumbersome.

Someone who wants a low maintenance bike. Ok service intervals are every 6000km and some parts could be cheaper, but petrol mpg can be quite high if you are sensible with your right hand. I have managed up to 320km between refills with the 19liter tank. (Probably had another 1.5 to 2 litres in the tank left). This is for a mixture of traffic and roads.

Someone who needs a fair amount of protection from the wind. I am 1.80 tall and I have tried a number of different screens to get a fair amount of wind protection. Powerbronze, Ermax and Suzuki's double screen. (The reason I have tried all 3 is because I had small accidents and the screen breaks quite easily when the bike falls on each side). All of these work well, the nicest looking being the latter, most efficient being the Ermax. The original screen is not that good. From 120km/h you can feel the strength of the wind hitting the helmet, from the neck up and on the top of your shoulders.
